Our criminal appeals programme provides a unique opportunity to develop crucial legal skills whilst working on a real criminal appeal case (though several years old and the original client has consented to being used for the programme).
“The FLC Criminal Appeals Programme has enabled me to gain a wide-ranging and comprehensive understanding of the numerous legal and evidential aspects involved in criminal cases of a serious nature.”

Work on Real Criminal Appeal Cases
Over the course of a seven-week programme, you will gain an insight into the process of a criminal appeal case and develop different skills that are needed in the legal profession. These skills include reviewing case papers; evidential analysis; oral advocacy; conference skills; written advocacy – letter to client and skeleton argument.
Previous cases have included appealing convictions for murder or grievous bodily harm (Section 18 with Intent). Due to the nature of these cases, the case papers are detailed and allow students to fully engage with critical evidential analysis as well as dealing with lots of information in a short time frame.
For students who demonstrate a particular ability in casework throughout the programme, you will be invited to be a caseworker for the Freedom Law Clinic engaging in a variety of pro bono cases.
