THE SOLICITORS QUALIFYING EXAMINATION (SQE) COMPRISES TWO STAGES, WITH SQE1 SERVING AS THE FOUNDATIONAL PHASE FOR EVALUATING CANDIDATES’ LEGAL KNOWLEDGE. SQE1 FOCUSES ON FUNCTIONING LEGAL KNOWLEDGE (FLK) AND IS DESIGNED TO ASSESS CANDIDATES’ UNDERSTANDING OF CORE LEGAL PRINCIPLES ACROSS VARIOUS SUBJECTS. IT TESTS THEIR ABILITY TO APPLY LEGAL CONCEPTS TO HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIOS AND REAL-WORLD SITUATIONS.
In this segment, candidates encounter questions related to the legal aspects of business transactions, contract formation, and agency relationships. They may be asked to analyze a business agreement and identify potential legal issues.
This area assesses candidates’ knowledge of civil litigation procedures, as well as alternative dispute resolution methods. They might have to recommend the most appropriate dispute resolution route for a specific case.
Candidates are tested on contract formation, terms, breach, remedies, and third-party rights. They could be required to draft clauses for a contract or analyse the enforceability of contractual terms
Scenarios in tort law may include negligence claims, product liability, and occupiers’ liability cases. Candidates might have to evaluate the liability of parties involved in a hypothetical accident.
This segment covers land law, conveyancing, leases, and rights in land. Candidates may be presented with scenarios involving property transactions and asked to advise on legal implications.
Candidates encounter questions related to constitutional law, administrative law, human rights, and judicial review. They could be asked to analyse the legality of governmental actions or assess human rights issues.
After successfully passing SQE1, candidates move on to SQE2, which focuses on assessing their practical legal skills in more complex contexts.
