Our criminal appeals programme allows you to make a direct contribution to our client casework, undertaking valuable legal research and pursuing new lines of enquiry, working under expert supervision from experienced criminal law solicitors in order to identify and prepare fresh grounds of appeal.
Our clients get the benefit of some of the brightest minds and emerging legal talent working on their case.
You will have access to our comprehensive online lecture series so that you understand some of the key legal concepts before undertaking specific tasks to move the client’s case forward as part of a small group.
What’s more, all of our work is completed digitally, which means that you can participate from almost anywhere in the world.

Participation in the programme usually involves 6 to 10 hours per week over 6 weeks. However, this can be completed flexibly around other commitments and the only fixed slot will be a weekly Zoom meeting with your team and FLC staff.
As we are a not-for-profit and self funding Community Interest Company we charge nominal £60 fee for the learning materials and participation in the programme. In recognition of your previous engagement with Advocate we are offering the following fee reductions:
If you can demonstrate your commitment to pro bono in addition to having completed Advocate’s volunteering programme, we will be selecting 10 outstanding candidates to benefit from a fully funded place on our criminal appeals programme.
For candidates who have successfully completed Advocate’s volunteering programme, we are offering a one third discount on participation in our criminal appeals programme, reducing the fee from £60 to £40.
All applicants will benefit from the discounted rates above and will automatically be considered for a fully funded place. We will respond to all candidates by 22 April, with a view to starting the programme in early to mid May.
