The Importance of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)

To qualify as a solicitor under the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route, you must complete at least two years of full-time (or equivalent) Qualifying Work Experience (QWE). Here’s what you need to know about completing your QWE:

Flexibility in Gaining QWE:

  • You can complete your QWE before, during, or after taking the SQE assessments.
  • Options include traditional training contracts, volunteering at legal advice centers, working as a paralegal, or completing a law degree placement.
  • Experience from previous roles may also count toward your QWE requirements.

Structure of QWE:

  • Gain QWE in one continuous block (e.g., a two-year training contract) or in stages at up to four organizations.
  • For example, six months of pro bono work in a legal advice center and 18 months as a paralegal in a law firm would meet the required two years.

Signing Off QWE:

  • Your QWE must be signed off by a solicitor or the Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) at your place of work.
  • Alternatively, a qualified solicitor with direct knowledge of your work can sign it off, even if they’re outside your organization and don’t hold a practicing certificate.

In today’s legal industry, professional experience is essential for standing out. Our course ensures you gain:

  • Focused, real-world experience in a specific legal area.
  • Practical skills and knowledge that give you a competitive edge.
